Description
Patrol Clock, Clock 1: No.1 and No. 2 Patrols. One of a set of two clocks. Part of a 24-hour clock timer system used for regulating the external perimeter checks of Auckland Prison, last used in the 1970s.
Grey coloured metal cabinet with hinged door on front with a vertical rectangular opening. This originally would have had glass (missing). At the top of the cabinet in the centre is a brown label with white text which reads, "CLOCK 1". Below this is a black label, "NEW SHEETS IN FILE ROOM". In black permanent marker to the left is written "No. 1 / No. 2 /Patrols." On the right, "1" is written in red. There are two hinges on the right of the cabinet door, and there is a keyhole on the left.
Underneath the cabinet affixed to a light grey metal backing is a clock. It has a large silver coloured face with black text and hands. In the centre of the face under the "12" is the maker, "SYNCHRONOME / LONDON." Below the "6" reads "MADE IN ENGLAND". Underneath the clock face is a large cylindrical mechanism that holds a piece of paper. The paper is white with printed black text. At the top of the paper, it reads "CLOCK 1", and has "DAY 1", "DAY 2", and "DAY 3" on each sheet. The dates "4/9" ; "5/9" and "6/9" are handwritten under each day. There is a sequence of numbers at the top for each of the 24 hours in a day. There are pin marks on the paper, which is where prison officers moved a magnetised lever to cause the indentation. The Supervisor would then check that the security patrol had been undertaken. On the underside of the barrel is a red label which reads "LEFTHAND CLOCK". The backing has four holes on edges for fixing to wall. There are wires and electrical components to either side. The cylinder and the clock face are mounted to the backing plate with screws.
