Description
Black and white oval mounted photographic print of John Michael Griffin. Griffin was a Motorman on Auckland Electric Tramways from 1901 till mid 1950s based in Epsom, and later Onehunga. Born to Irish parents in Liverpool on 5th December 1882, Griffin with his Father and siblings emigrated to Brisbane on the Jumna in the 1890s, post the death of his mother in 1888. In 1901 John Michael Griffin sailed to New Zealand on the Elingamite to work as a Motorman on Auckland's first trams. Griffin stayed in Auckland worked on trams throughout his career, except for service during the First World War where he served on the Hospital ship the Marama. Griffin passed away on 29th October 1955 in Onehunga.
