Description
Trans Antarctic Expedition Provisions Box.

Rectangular box constructed from wood. At the top of the box, there is a lid which opens on hinges which are set into the back edge of the object. Metal has been used around the other three edges of the box’s lid. The metal has been riveted to the top and bent over the edge of the box, extending down the side so that when the lid is closed, it overhangs the sides, stabilising the lid. Metal has been used around the long edges at the bottom of the box to reinforce the object. At the front end of the box, there is a raised foot attached to the bottom of the object.

On the top face of the box, a strip of textile has been secured with a metal fixture. There is an identical strip of fabric fixed to the front face of the box. The two strips are designed to be tied together to secure the box closed. “[name] / [name]” handwritten on the front face of the box, either side of the metal fixture.

“REQN No. / 132 / C [up arrow] A / 53 / T.A.E / ROSS SEA / TRANS-ANTARCTIC / EXPEDITION / R / 8679” has been printed in black onto the proper right side of the box.

Underneath the box, "C10/438" has been handwritten in black felt pen.
