Description
Brandt Radio Cassette Recorder.

Part 1: Front: The radio, cassette player/recorder is black with pale gold and bright gold embellishments. The front panel is split into three sections. On the side sections are circular speakers rimmed with gold embellishment. Above each speaker is a rectangular tweeter also with pale gold embellishment.

The central section is further split into top and bottom. The top section is the radio frequency spectrum with the dial on the right. Text reads “FM 88 92 96 100 104 108 MHz / AM 530 600 700 800 1000 1400 1600 / kHz / scale / scale.” Beneath the dial reads: “TUNING.”

Below the radio spectrum controls is a headphone jack “PHONES” a volume control “VOLUME / MIN / Loudness / MAX,” a tonal control “TONE / LOW / HIGH” and two switches: “MODE / ST WIDE / STEREO / MONO” and “FUNCTION / RADIO/ FM / RADIO / AM / RADIO OFF / TAPE.” The final section is an indicator light: “INDICATOR / POWER / BATTERY / FM ST”

Beneath the radio section is the cassette player/recorder component. The cassette deck has a smooth panel at the top and bottom with a clear middle section that is split with a striped texture on either side. Beneath the middle section of the cassette deck is a horizontal arrow pointing to the left with only the top half of the arrow. At the base of the cassette deck reads “SOFT TOUCH 10 / BIG OUTPUT POWER” in a bright gold colour. To the right of the cassette holder cover the logo reads “BRANDT.” Beneath reads “WIDER STEREO SOUND / RADIO CASSETTE RECORDER / MODEL TCR-10"

The cassette player/recorder controls are beneath the cassette deck. There are six switches “ONE TOUCH RECORD PLAY F.FWD STOP/EJECT PAUSE.” There is a SOFT TOUCH logo to the right of the controls: “SOFT TOUCH / OPERATION.”

All text is in pale gold, excluding the logo on the cassette deck which is a brighter gold colour.

A handle protrudes from the top, connecting between the grooves of the three sections of the front which wrap around to the back. The handle folds back and slots into the grooves and lies flat.

Back: In an inset from the top there is a retracted antenna folded down against the radio and clipped in place on the left. On the left beneath the antenna and to the right of a screw, embossed text reads “CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE / THIS SCREW EXCEPT FOR ANTENNA REPLACEMENT.” On the right is the AC adaptor plug (for Part Two) “AC POWER / 220V 110V / 240V 120V”. In the centre embossed text has two hazard symbols. On the left is the Electricity symbol, and on the right is the Warning symbol. Text in between and below reads “CAUTION / RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK / DO NOT OPEN / ATTENTION – RISQUE DE CHOCELECTRIQUE-NE / PAS QUVRIP” To the right is a black label with silver text “BRANDT MODEL NO. TCR10H / STEREO RADIO CASSETTE RECORDER / 2 WAY OPERATION / AC BATTERY / AC 110-120V/220-240V / 50/60 HZ 14w / BATTERY 9V / FREQUENCY RANGE / FM 88 – 108 MHz / AM 525 – 1605 kHz / BRANDT ELECTRONICS (1975) LTD / 25a SHEFFIELD CRESCENT P O BOX 14081 CHCH NZ / TELEPHONE (33) 585 159”

At the base panel on the back is the battery compartment cover with grippers on either side reading “PUSH / OPEN” on the left and “OPEN” on the right.

Part 2: Black AC adaptor cable with mains two-pronged plug at the other end.
Brief History
The Brandt TCR-10H is a radio cassette recorder released about 1985. It has a single tape cassette deck and can receive AM and FM radio. The TCR-10H has a portable design with a carry handle and is relatively compact and lightweight. It can be powered via a mains power adaptor cable or 6 x 1.5V size D batteries.

Brandt Electronics Limited was a local electronics manufacturing and assembling company based in Christchurch operating between 1975 and 1993. This stereo was imported as a kit from the Sankei Manufacturing Company, Osaka, Japan, and assembled at the Brandt factory in Christchurch. Due to import licensing restrictions at the time, importing foreign made parts to assemble in New Zealand was more cost effective than importing built-up units and also made use of cheaper mass-produced overseas components.
