Brief History
As one of the last North American cars sold in New Zealand, the Chevrolet Impala represents a turning point in the country’s automotive history.

The end of World War Two saw a rise in import tariffs. These tariffs were designed to encourage British imports and protect the car assembly industry. British cars had initially been less practical for the rough roads of New Zealand, but as road conditions improved, the country underwent a significant change in motoring. New Zealanders began opting for smaller cheaper European cars over the large expensive North American models.

The Impala is one of General Motor’s most successful models. From its introduction in 1958, the Impala sold well. By 1965, it was selling at a rate of more than a million units a year, a record that remains today.
