Description
Mortar, Wedgwood. Round in shape with a curvature that leads to a round base and a small lip on top which serves as a pourer.
May be a pharmaceutical object as opposed to domestic
Brief History
Mortars and pestles have been used for thousands of years for grinding substances, such as spices, to a fine or coarse powder.

Wedgwood manufactured large quantities of ceramic scientific apparatus for general sale, as well as supplying (without charge) items required by persons engaged in chemical research.

The Wedgwood mortar and pestle was introduced by the company in 1779, and featured a porcelain mortar and pestle with a porcelain head and wooden handle, for pharmaceutical use. Advertising material highlights the hardness of the ceramic and its imperviousness to the actions of chemicals such as acids. This mortar likely dates from the early 1900s.
