Description
-1 Radio telephone - originally used by Pan American Airways and taken over by United Airlines. Black metal case with silver-coloured control panel. 3 plastic controls on the panel. First is volume, second Squelch and third Power Off, RX, S'By. A flexible, spirally telephone cord extends from the control panel giving 1500 mm of lead. On the end of the lead, is a microphone handpiece with an Off/On button on the top of the unit. Taped to the face of the control panel is a sign which reads "Company Frequency 131 Call Sign "Panop Two". Other information on the face of the panel is "Telecommunications", "Continental 25", and the manufacturer's "PYE" badge. 2 leads run from the back of the unit. One is red and the other black. Their length is 450 mm. On the ends of these leads are spring-loaded plastic connection. A series of white letters and numbers are written on the back of the cabinet giving technical information. A safety panel covers the leads and terminals on the back. A sticker warns - "Warning Observe Supply Polarity". On either side of the cabinet is a finger-adjustment nut.
-2 Electrical Transformer - cast iron frame, rectangular box-shape with steel mesh ventilated sides. Inside coils have Motorola written on their casings. Cast iron fins at one end extend out 60 mm from the transformer housing. A power lead, 2270 mm long, is fitted into the transformer below the cooling fins. On the end of this grey lead is a 3-pin power plug. Next to this cable, there is a 5 ampere fuse control dial. A heavy duty, black insulated wire also extends from below the cooling fins. This also is over 2 metres in length. At the end of this black lead, is an electrical plastic coupling which transfers the charge into 2 red wires which are also just over 2 metres long. A further plastic coupling transfers the charge into one black 60 mm wire with a metal cap and one red wire of the same length, also with a metal cap. These would appear to equate with the polarity of the equivalent coloured leads from the back of the radio telephone.
