Description
Photograph taken 28th December 1937 by an Auckland Star photographer. In the foreground is the Pan American Airways Samoan Clipper, under the command of Captain Edwin Music. Beyond the Clipper is the Imperial Airways flying boat Centaurus, which arrived in Auckland on December 27th on its pioneer flight from Great Britain, under the command of Captain J. W. Burgess. The arrival of the British flying boat forged the last link in a chain of airways which encircles the globe.
Less than a fortnight after this photograph was taken the clipper, whilst on its return trip to America, blew up in mid-air. The cause of the disaster was not ascertained. All seven members of the crew perished.
