Folding field camera by Thornton Pickard. Note that the lens is a Beck Symmetrical. The advantage of a Symmetrical design of a lens was first recognised by Dallmeyer in 1866 in his Rapid Rectilinear lens, one of the most popular lenses of the 19th Century. Any symmetrical lens construction almost automatically corrects for coma, distortion and chromatic aberration. Practically all modern wide angle lenses are of a symmetrical or near symmetrical design for this reason. Hand-written
