Description
Jervois Road Tram Shelter. Blue shelter with brown-red roof, cream posts, and green seat.
Brief History
This is an early example of a Tram Shelter which was constructed around 1920 and used up until 2002. This shelter was located on Jervois Road, opposite Ardmore Road. Between the 1840s and 1870s this area had been used mainly for farming, however by the mid-1880s sections were being subdivided and sold for residential development. In 1902 the Electric trams arrived on the streets of Auckland, and this shelter on Jervois Road was built around 20 years later. Made from wood - possibly a native New Zealand timber - and with a corrugated iron roof it allowed a place to sit with a degree of cover whilst waiting for the Tram.
