Description
Metal stirrup pump. Silver painted stand, wooden handle on pump, metal gauze on bottom of feeder shaft to prevent blockages. Paper tag was attached by string to neck of pump- tag describes pumps use. Object missing hose. Designed to be used in household bucket. Objects owned by Raymond George Mercer. He was connected to the Pt. Chevalier Section of the Emergency Fire Service between 1941 - 1944.
Brief History
This stirrup pump was used to help put out fires caused by incendiary bombs during World War II. The pump was placed in a bucket of water with the operator standing on the pump's metal leg to keep it in place. The handle was then pumped to draw up water and the hose was then directed at the fire.
