Brief History
Wagon W 569 was a 4-wheeled, insulated meat wagon, a type which was commonly used throughout the New Zealand Railways prior to containerisation. It was one of a batch of twenty W 7 type insulated wagons constructed between 1931 and 1932. Many of these wagons transported export meat from freezing works to the ports. They were insulated by various means, usually with thick walls lined with cork, but had no refrigerating apparatus fitted. Therefore, they were treated as priority freight as they had limited endurance from the freezing works to the docks. This particular wagon was renumbered circa 1978 to W 16 and written off in September 1982 at Westfield and transported to MOTAT.
