Brief History
This is a mechanical carpet sweeper. It is a box containing brushes and rollers which are attached to a series of gears, which, when pushed rotate. The brushes sweep dust and dirt from the floor into a container.

The innovation was patented in the USA in 1876, by Melville R Bissell, and companies around the world quickly replicated this technology. This example is from the Ewbank factories in the United Kingdom.

As floor coverings became more common in houses, labour-saving appliances were devised. Carpet sweepers, such as this, became popular globally during the late 19th century.
