As preparations were being made for the establishment of the first telephone exchanges in New Zealand poles like this began marching across the country. Humourously dubbed "Lemon Trees", after the Director of Telegraph Dr Lemon, they gave way to more streamlined versions which , in their turn are being replaced by underground cable.
