This strange object is one of the first telephones used in New Zealand. Embossed on the top is the name of the maker, C. Henry, the year of manufacture, 1878, and the place of manufacture, Dunedin. It was from Dunedin in 1878 that an instrument like this was used to make New Zealand's first documented telephone call - to Tokomairiro (now Milton)
